Audi Q5 Control Arms FAQs

What do Control Arms Do?

Also known as "A arms," they connect your SUV's frame to the wheel assembly. Your SUV features two upper arms and two lower arms on each side

One end of each control arm attaches to the chassis, where bushings reduced vibration and noise, while the other connects to a ball joint on the steering knuckle. This keeps your wheels free to move in all directions.

What Are The Kinds of Control Arm Assemblies?

There are three ways that control arms connect. A bolt-in assembly is common, and used when vehicles have McPherson struts. This type generally requires more effort when it's time to replace them. Unitized or press-in assemblies, on the other hand, come with a ball joint already integrated. That means you'll need to replace the whole assembly come repair time -- which requires less work than a bolt-in type.

How Do I Spot Faulty Control Arms?

Eventually, even the highest quality control arms can begin to go bad, whether due to age, wear and tear, or rough road conditions. Signs of failure include:

  • Trouble controlling your SUV
  • A popping or clunking sound
  • Your SUV drifts to one side when you traverse uneven surfaces or brake

Whether you're experiencing these symptoms or not, it's a good idea to hoist your Audi Q5 up on a lift at least once a year so that you can carefully examine your suspension parts for signs of damage or weakness.
