Buyer's Guide to Audi Q5 Drive Shafts

How Your Audi Q5 Drive Shaft Works

There are many types of drive shafts, also known as drivetrains, including front- and rear-wheel drive. However, your Audi Q5 features the famed Audi quattro all-wheel drive. This unique system distributes the torque between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive as conditions dictate, providing your wheels with better traction and stability when facing difficult weather or road conditions.

In this setup, your SUV is equipped with two drive shafts. There's one up front, which connects to a differential and transfer case via universal joints, also called U-joints. Another drive shaft at the rear of the vehicle connects to the transmission and a rear differential.

How to Spot Drive Shaft Problems

Unfortunately, even the highest quality drive shaft components can begin to fail over time. That's not good, since it affects your handling. Signs of failure include:

  • Trouble executing turns
  • You hear loud noises when changing gears
  • Your Q5 shudders when you accelerate
  • The SUV's underbody vibrates
  • You notice clicking or knocking noises

Why Genuine Audi Drive Shafts Are Best

When you do need to replace your drivetrain, it's important to get the right one for your SUV. Audi makes the only drive shafts that were designed specifically for your SUV, offering the assured fit, quality, and performance you want. Given that, why would you ever try using generic parts that don't measure up?
